The Internet search engines work in a way that tracks how many links are going from external sites to your site to help determine your ranking. If a site has 5 links to it and another site has 10 links to it the the second site will have a higher ranking. If however one of the links from the first site was from a big site that had lots of links going to it (over 5) then it rank higher than the second site.
Equation:
PageRank(site) = (1-d) + d(PageRank(1ink1)/outboundlinks(1ink1) + ... + Pagerank(lastlink)/outboundlink(lastlink))
d is a dampening value normally around 0.85
When your site gets found by the search spiders it then reads your meta tags to learn about the content of your site as well as looking at its content. The more links to your site the quicker it will be found by a search engine crawler and the more regulalry it will be updated online when the content changes.
